Q: Are practice exams available for the HVAC tests?
A:
Yes. The Division of HVAC provides practice exams upon request at no charge.  Contact the Division of HVAC at 502-573-0395.

Q: How do I become licensed and what are the HVAC requirements for Kentucky?
A:
All HVAC companies, corporations/entities or individuals that operate, advertise or engage in the practice of HVAC contracting installation, service and repair must have an individual licensed as an HVAC master contractor that represents the company.

Kentucky does not license the company or entity.  Kentucky issues HVAC licenses to the individuals within the HVAC trade.  The HVAC master contractor must employ licensed HVAC journeyman to perform the HVAC work.

All HVAC licenses are issued by experience and examination.  HVAC journeyman candidates must have two years of experience, working under the supervision of a licensed HVAC master contractor.  HVAC master contractor candidates must have two  years of experience as a licensed HVAC journeyman mechanic.

Candidates must take and successfully pass the required examinations offered by ICC Contractor Exam Services.  Upon passing the required exam the candidate then must submit an application and required documents to the Office of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of HVAC, for review and license issuance.

Q: How much does the HVAC license cost?
A:
The Kentucky HVAC master contractor license application fee is $250 and the HVAC journeyman license application fee is $50.  The application fees are nonrefundable and payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer, with check or money order.

Q: How do I renew my license?
A:
Currently, all HVAC licenses expire June 30 of each year and must be renewed annually.  The Division of HVAC mails renewal notices 60 days prior to expiration on May 1 of each year.  Kentucky HVAC master and journeyman license holders are required to obtain eight hours of approved Kentucky HVAC continuing education for license renewal.
